เข้าใจคำว่า ฉนวนกันเสียง ก่อน
ฉนวนกันเสียงเป็นชื่อเรียกวัสดุที่มีความเข้าใจคลาดเคลื่อนกันเป็นอย่างมาก เพราะคนส่วนใหญ่จะเรียกวัสดุซับเสียง (sound absorptive materials) และวัสดุกันเสียง (soundproofing materials) รวมๆกันว่า "ฉนวนกันเสียง" โดยมีความเข้าใจว่าเป็นวัสดุที่ต้องการนำมาใช้ในการลดเสียงดังรบกวนนั่นเอง ซึ่งตามหลักการของงาน acoustic หรือ noise control นั้น ฉนวนกันเสียง คือ ฉนวนหรือวัสดุที่มีคุณสมบัติในการต้านทานแรงดันเสียงซึ่งเคลื่อนที่จากด้านหนี่งไปยังอีกด้านหนึ่ง
ฉนวนกันเสียงความแตกต่างของฉนวนกันเสียงและฉนวนซับเสียง
ฉนวนกันเสียงมีหน้าที่ในการป้องกันไม่ให้เสียงผ่านหรือผ่านได้น้อยที่สุด หลักการทำงานคือการสะท้อนเสียงกลับ วัสดุประเภทกันเสียงส่วนใหญ่จะมีผิวเรียบมัน มีน้ำหนักมาก ตัวชี้วัดประสิทธิภาพคือค่า TL (Transmission Loss) หรือค่า STC (Sound Transmission Class) แต่ฉนวนซับเสียงมีหน้าที่ในการดูดซับพลังงานเสียง เพื่อให้มีการสะท้อนกลับน้อยที่สุด วัสดุประเภทซับเสียงส่วนใหญ่จะมีผิวเป็นรูพรุน หรือผิวหยาบ ผิวไม่เรียบและมีโครงสร้างข้างในเป็นโพรงหรือเส้นใย มีค่าบ่งชี้ถึงประสิทธิภาพในการซับเสียงคือ SAC (Sound Absorption Coefficient) หรือค่าสัมประสิทธิ์การซับเสียง
เลือกฉนวนกันเสียงแบบไหนดีที่สุด
ฉนวนกันเสียงที่ดีคือฉนวนหรือวัสดุที่นำมาใช้แล้ว แก้ปัญหาเสียงดังรบกวนได้ผลเป็นที่พึงพอใจเมื่อเทียบกับค่าใช้จ่ายที่ลงทุนไป เพราะฉะนั้นฉนวนกันเสียงที่ดีที่สุดคือฉนวนที่ให้ความพอใจสูงสุดแก่ผู้ใช้งานหรือผู้ออกแบบ เพราะฉนวนกันเสียงที่ดีที่สุดหรือวัสดุที่มีค่า STC หรือ TL สูงสุด อาจจะมีราคาที่สูงเกินไป จนผู้ใช้หรือผู้ออกแบบ ไม่สามารถนำมาใช้แก้ปัญหาในชีวิตประจำวันได้จริง แต่คุณสมบัติทั่วไปที่ควรมีของฉนวนกันเสียงที่ดี ได้แก่
• มีค่า STC หรือ TL ที่เหมาะกับความต้องการ
• ไม่ลามไฟ ไม่เป็นเชื้อเพลิง
• หาซื้อได้ง่าย ไม่ว่าจะปริมาณน้อยหรือมาก
• สะดวกและง่ายในการติดตั้ง
• สะดวกในการทำความสะอาดหรือไม่ต้องทำความสะอาดเลย
• ปลอดภัยต่อระบบหายใจและปลอดภัยต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม
• ไม่เป็นขยะพิษ เมื่อทำการรื้อถอน
